This is an article I wrote for our SassyScribblers conservation blog in April 2023. Even though the piece is almost two years old, the information still holds true.
I read a post awhile back that talked about the insect decline as measured by how many the person saw hit their windshield. Odd test I admit, but I remember trips as a kid and seeing a lot of insects hitting the windshield of our car! Not so many now for sure.
Same here, Judy. I remember riding in the car and looking around and through all the bug splats to see where we were going. A few years ago, I realized that wasn't happening anymore, so I researched the insect apocalypse and wrote an article about it.
During my research, I found several articles and even some studies concerning the worldwide decrease in bug/vehicle encounters. Entomologists call it the windshield or windscreen phenomenon, hypothesizing that the observation of fewer dead insects on the windshields of people's cars is due to a global decline in insect populations. https://gretaburroughs.substack.com/p/where-have-all-the-bug-splats-gone
Thanks for sharing the link and for providing info on how we can give these little guys a helping hand (as well as the birds and other wild creatures that come into our yard)!
